A couple and their two young children were left homeless around noon Sunday after a fire raged through their one-story house near downtown Elma. The owners, Jeremy and Angela Sanchez, have lived in the three-bedroom house at 1513 W. Waldrip, for the past six years. They have two sons, ages 3 and 2.
On Sunday, as firefighters hosed down the smoldering interior and kept a close watch to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring homes, Elma’s fire marshal, Steve Petitt, declared the house was a “total loss.”

A house with a shake roof next door was especially worrisome, Elma Fire Chief Tom Boling said Monday, noting, “The wind was blowing that way.”
Thankfully, there were no injuries, Boling said, and “it’s fortunate that everything was contained to one structure. Everybody involved did a very good job keeping it contained.”
But “of course, we wish we could have saved the (Sanchez) house, but it just didn’t work out that way,” the chief added, expressing how “very sorry” everyone was about that. |

It has been a great
season so far, and with no seniors on our varsity team, hopefully we will continue to improve. — Montesano head coach

ELMA – As the scorecards slowly filtered into the clubhouse, things could not have been tighter as Montesano and W.F. West (Chehalis) were within just a few strokes of one another. Then as the final varsity group turned in their cards it was Nathan Shea’s 42 that sealed a, 214-215, non-league boys golf victory for the unbeaten Bulldogs (6-0) on Thursday, Sept. 25, at Oaksridge Golf Course in Elma.

“It was really a pretty exciting match,” Montesano Head Coach Lloyd Aldrich said. “We were down two strokes until Nathan’s 42 in the No. 6 spot won it for us.”
The match victory – Montesano’s fourth against a Class 2A opponent – was a testament to the young Bulldog squad’s depth.

Sobering news for Mark Reed hospital board
In no uncertain terms, an interim report released last week to Mark Reed Hospital District 1 commissioners from the district’s new Community Advisory Committee says the McCleary hospital needs to “fix” some problems and begin doing it immediately.
The report, independent from Mark Reed, also lays a portion of the responsibility for the district’s financial struggles in the laps of Mark Reed staff and says the issues the committee raises “must be addressed and resolved as quickly as feasibly possible” if the hospital and district are to survive.
Two deaths among weekend tragedies
An Elma man was killed Saturday when his car hit a tree and a McCleary man drowned while swimming at Vance Creek Park on Sunday. The two tragedies were among the numerous serious calls fielded by law enforcement and fire agencies in the Elma area last weekend.
At 9:16 Saturday morning, Grays Harbor Fire District 5 received a call about a traffic fatality east of Elma on the Cloquallum Road, near the Powers Creek Road, District 5 firefighter/paramedic Johnathan Huntley said Monday.
